Are You Ready for House, M.D.’s Season 8?

Published first at BlogCritics

Caveat: Mild spoilers ahoy, me mateys.

We are about one month from the season eight premiere of House, M.D., starring Hugh Laurie as the genius diagnostician Dr. Gregory House. When last we saw Dr. House, he had crashed his car into the (unoccupied) dining room of his boss and ex-girlfriend Dr. Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein). Fleeing from the scene, House ended season seven on a beach somewhere in the South Pacific, strolling down a beach into the sunset.

As we enter season eight, much has changed in House’s world. Cuddy is gone. Full stop. Edelstein’s departure (she will be seen this season on The Good Wife in a guest-starring role) was a blow to House’s cast and creative team.

But what effect will her departure have on House? Will he feel responsible for her leaving? Or will he blow it off, holding his angst over it (which will be there) inside? Personally, I would like to see House’s struggle with Cuddy’s absence, trying to make it not matter, but failing in his effort.

Book Signing and House Chat: Indian Trails Library, Wheeling IL

Stop by and talk about House Season 7 and the upcoming Season 8. I will be at the library to sign books, meet fans and answer questions about the show, characters, actors, and more.

Author Barbara Barnett will discuss the complex character of TV’s most popular doctor, Gregory House, M.D. as featured in her book, Chasing Zebras: The Unofficial Guide to House, M.D., at the Indian Trails Public Library, 355 S. Schoenbeck Rd., Wheeling, on Thursday, August 4, at 7 p.m.

Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) has been solving medical mysteries since November, 2004, when House, M.D. debuted on FOX-TV. Barnett, widely considered a leading House expert, takes fans deep into the heart of the show’s central character, examining the way his colleagues and patients reflect him and each other. She looks at the show’s mechanics, its music, settings, and humor to obtain a greater understanding of the program’s central message. She also reflects on what the show says about modern medicine, ethics, religion, and much more.

House, MD Season 4 Redux: 97 Seconds

Hi everyone,

I’ve decided to revisit seasons past by reposting some of my reviews from seasons four and five. They all originally appeared on Blogcritics, but I’m inviting you all to have a read and let me know what you thought about this great episode from season 4!

Originally Appeared on BlogCritcs, November 2007

House has had two near-death experiences at the time of this episode. The first (that we know of) was when he had a heart attack during his treatment for the infarction (“Three Stories”). During the time he was hovering between life and death, he seemed to have an out of body experience, or so he told his class, dropping in on the futures of three patients, whom he may or may not have ever treated. These patients all had leg issues and their treatments had differing outcomes than his (both for the better).
When asked about these experiences – these visions – House says that the “white light” that some people seem to see when having a near-death experience (and the visits to the afterlife) are merely the chemical effects of the brain shutting down. It’s what, he says, he chooses to believe. He explains that his choice to believe this makes him more comfortable. His disbelief in the afterlife makes him hopeful that life (as brutal as it’s been at times, we now know) is not simply “a test” for some other life to come.

House’s second near-death experience came when he was shot by an assailant who has not, to this day, been caught. The loss of blood and shock had him hovering between life and death as he hallucinated entire conversations with his shooter. During his hallucination, House assessed his own life and self-worth in conversations with the shooter (who, because it was a hallucination, was really his own subconscious). Ultimately confronted with the easy exit of death (symbolized by the scene where he shared the suicide attempt of the shooter’s wife), House chose life and fought his way out of unconsciousness, however briefly, to tell Cameron he wanted to try a radical pain-management treatment. If he was going to live, he was going to try to better his conditions.

The House, M.D Season Finale “Moving On” – Some Final Thoughts

Posted on Blogcritics.org

I’ve done a lot of thinking about “Moving On,” the House, M.D. Season 7 finale. I decided after watching its original airing, I’d let it rest a week and watch it again without preconceived notions fueled by spoilers and promos, and without the news of Lisa Edelstein’s (Lisa Cuddy) departure too fresh in my mind. It’s sunk in by now that she’s not returning, and in a way, the finale—whatever you may think of it—gives the series an way to make the break permanent if that’s what the parties want. (Although who knows? There’s no reason to believe she’ll stay away forever, and wouldn’t it be spectacular for her to make a surprise guest appearance sometime this season?)
